Random questions about beans
Since I've had a Sam's Club membership, I've noticed that the only two varieties of dry beans they seem to stock in quantity are Great Northern beans and pinto beans, and it seems like even the variety at Walmart has been waning recently. So I got to wondering, is there a "most nutritious" variety of bean I should just try to buy in quantity and not worry about buying every inexpensive variety on the market? Is there a place besides Sam's Club that sells cheap beans in bulk (preferably no more than $1.50 a lb.), whether a big-box store or online? I hate to buy a Costco membership just to add to my bean variety, especially since I'd have to travel an hour to the closest Costco. Or should I not worry and just buy all the beans at Sam's Club and that would be sufficient for protein and any other nutrients from beans in general?
Also, any suggestions on the least-gassy variety of bean? I don't have a problem with gas per se, but I don't want to cause problems for anyone else in the family.;) |
Re: Random questions about beans
GFS has beans in bulk. Also if you put some rice in with your beans it will not eliminate, but it will reduce gaseous emanations.

Re: Random questions about beans
If you live near a big city, go to Mexican stores. They have lots of bulk bean type stuff there.

Re: Random questions about beans
I have never ordered from here, but this looks like a good mail order type of place for variety :

Re: Random questions about beans
Copied off of a Healthfood website, I don't know if they sell them in bulk at wholesale clubs.
----------------------------------------------------- BEANS (LEGUMES) - Lentils: Among the Legumes, the Lentils are the MOST NUTRITIOUS, containing NOT just HIGH-QUALITY Protein, but Complex Carbohydrates for ENERGY and WARMTH! NOTE: Lentils cook MUCH QUICKER than MOST other Beans and are EVEN MORE NUTRITIOUS, when sprouted |

Re: Random questions about beans
If you are looking to buy more than a sack or two of bulk food, say several hundred to several thousand pounds of beans, wheat, rice, corn, and other staples in bulk 25 to 50 lb bags, I will heartily recommend http://www.aaoobfoods.com/staples.htm in Abita Springs, Louisiana.
If you just want a couple of 25 to 50 lb sacks of various beans or grains, there are a lot of places you can buy them and have the shipped via UPS. UPS shipping rates tend to be high. Best to plan your food preps and buy everything all at once in one large order. That way you can have a pallet or two of food delivered via truck freight a lot more economically than via UPS. |
Re: Random questions about beans
Due to the increasesin shipping costs I have found it's actually cheeper to buy things like beans from Sam's and even Wallyworld.

Re: Random questions about beans
i like pinto beans because they're cheap and i finally learned to cook them.
i think the gaseousness aspect of beans is largely related to how they're cooked and whether fat has been added. in other words, how easy they are to digest. if they're thoroughly cooked with no fat added, you just don't get that Blazing Saddles effect. |
Re: Random questions about beans
Now that you have them how do you cook them? http://www.beanbible.com/ Sometimes we grind the beans into flour and add them to the regular flour for a higher protein bread.
